Sexist remarks by Solveig for female soccer player enrages online community
On Monday, the Ballon d’Or Awards Ceremony 2018 in Paris was meant to serve as a strategic milestone for growth of the women’s soccer future. This ceremony was to commence with honoring of the world’s top ranking female player along with the male counterparts of the game such as Lionel Messi and Ronaldo.
However, things went south fast after Ada Hegerberg, the Olympique Lyonnais Striker was called on stage to receive this award but was insulted by DJ Martin Solveig, the host of the show. Reportedly, the DJ asked this 23-year-old Norway-based player if she would twerk at the stage to celebrate this moment. To this, Hegerberg answered with a “No” and looked pretty uncomfortable. However, to ease the atmosphere, she agreed upon dancing with Solveig while a song by Frank Sinatra played in the background.
Post the event, the social media users started posting against the insulting commentary made by Solveig to the female player. While some called it blatant sexism, some pointed out how it was a clear example of patriarchal society. However, Solveig later used Twitter to explain that he had been joking around. He also apologized if his behavior offended anyone. He posted a video apologizing for the same.
